Spawning Mops for Rainbowfish

AQUANEST • RAINBOWFISH

Make egg collection part of your rainbowfish routine. AquaNest mops provide fine strands for suitable mop-spawning rainbowfish and a breeding site you can remove without uprooting the aquarium.

Use several mops as removable bottom cover

In a suitable rainbowfish setup, group a few non-floating mops into removable lower cover while keeping plenty of open swimming space. Offer spawning mops at the level your fish prefer and treat egg-bearing mops separately: transfer them to a prepared hatching setup instead of cleaning them with the bottom-cover mops.

Easy cleaning is part of the setup: check for eggs and animals, lift an empty mop by its center tie, swish it in removed aquarium water and siphon the exposed bottom. No soap. See the multiple-mop bottom-cover guide.

A defined spawning spot

Fine yarn strands provide an alternative to fine-leaved spawning plants for suitable species.

Check and rotate

Inspect one removable mop and replace it when moving eggs to a prepared hatching tank.

Color with a purpose

Choose a colorway you enjoy and can inspect easily under your aquarium lighting.

From spawning site to a planned fry setup

Rainbowfish such as Boesemani rainbowfish are commonly bred with spawning mops. Egg collection is only the beginning: their tiny fry need suitable first foods and careful water management. Plan the grow-out setup before collecting eggs, rather than waiting until the first fry appear.

Put your mop to work

Offer the mop in a breeding aquarium with swimming space around it. Observe where your fish spawn and adjust the placement accordingly. Check the strands gently and move an egg-bearing mop only into a prepared setup with suitable water conditions. A spare mop lets you continue the routine while the first batch develops.

Easy to clean and ready to reuse

Before lifting the mop, look carefully for eggs, fry or shrimp among the strands. For routine debris removal, gently swish it in a separate container of removed aquarium water. Never use soap or household detergent. Keep an egg-bearing mop separate from your cleaning routine, inspect the yarn for damage, and use dedicated equipment between tanks. Read our mop-cleaning guide for more.

Can the mop stay with the adults?

It can remain as spawning material, but eggs and fry left with adults are at risk of being eaten. Moving eggs to a separate setup gives you more control. A mop alone does not protect a batch from predation.

Choose the look for your aquarium

AquaNest mops come in floating and non-floating styles, with colorways shown in the current shop. Start with the placement your fish need, then choose a color you enjoy. Buying for a fish store or multiple breeding tanks? See our wholesale options.
