AQUANEST • PLATIES
Give newborn platies a place to retreat. AquaNest mops add a dense patch of yarn cover without waiting for plants to fill in, and you can lift them out for easy routine cleaning.
Use several mops as removable bottom cover
Several non-floating mops can make a removable bottom-cover patch in a platy colony or grow-out tank. Leave gaps for swimming and water flow, and keep part of the bottom clear for feeding and siphoning. This is fry cover; platies give birth to live young.
Easy cleaning is part of the setup: check for eggs and animals, lift an empty mop by its center tie, swish it in removed aquarium water and siphon the exposed bottom. No soap. See the multiple-mop bottom-cover guide.
Cover from day one
Add a patch of strands before fry arrive so small fish have somewhere to retreat.
Flexible layout
Position the mop alongside plants or other cover while leaving the adults room to swim.
Simple upkeep
Lift, inspect and gently rinse when debris builds up. No pruning or plant lighting is needed for the yarn itself.
For platies, the benefit is fry cover
Platies give birth to live young, so they do not use a mop to lay eggs. The useful feature is the network of small spaces among the strands. It can add cover in a colony tank where adults and fry share the aquarium, but adults and other tankmates may still eat the young.
Put your mop to work
Create more than one area of cover and leave clear swimming and feeding space between them. Watch where the fry gather and adjust placement without trapping them. Keep up water changes and suitable fry feeding. If preserving a particular brood is the priority, a separate grow-out setup provides more control than cover alone.

Easy to clean and ready to reuse
Before lifting the mop, look carefully for eggs, fry or shrimp among the strands. For routine debris removal, gently swish it in a separate container of removed aquarium water. Never use soap or household detergent. Keep an egg-bearing mop separate from your cleaning routine, inspect the yarn for damage, and use dedicated equipment between tanks. Read our mop-cleaning guide for more.
Is this only for one platy color variety?
No. The cover role is relevant to common ornamental platy varieties, including wagtail and Mickey Mouse types. Pick the mop for the layout and appearance you want; yarn color is not a guarantee of fry survival.
Choose the look for your aquarium
AquaNest mops come in floating and non-floating styles, with colorways shown in the current shop. Start with the placement your fish need, then choose a color you enjoy. Buying for a fish store or multiple breeding tanks? See our wholesale options.
