Spawning Mops for Japanese Ricefish (Medaka)

AQUANEST • RICEFISH

Build an easy-to-check spawning spot for your medaka. AquaNest mops offer a removable tangle of yarn strands for egg attachment, with colorful options that are easy to find in your setup.

Use several mops as removable bottom cover

Several non-floating mops can form removable bottom-cover patches in a suitable medaka setup. Keep open water and good circulation. Bottom cover and egg collection serve different purposes: offer an accessible spawning mop, inspect it for eggs and move an egg-bearing mop to your prepared hatching setup.

Easy cleaning is part of the setup: check for eggs and animals, lift an empty mop by its center tie, swish it in removed aquarium water and siphon the exposed bottom. No soap. See the multiple-mop bottom-cover guide.

Egg attachment

Female medaka carry a cluster of eggs briefly before attaching them to a suitable surface.

Easy to inspect

A removable mop gives you a defined place to look for eggs instead of searching every plant.

Ready for rotation

Keep a spare mop ready so you can replace one moved to a separate hatching setup.

A simple routine for a medaka breeding tank

Japanese ricefish, commonly called medaka, are egg layers. A mop provides spawning material; it does not create the right breeding conditions by itself. Use an established aquarium or suitable tub with appropriate water conditions, food and protection from extreme temperatures.

Put your mop to work

Try a floating mop in an accessible area and watch whether the fish use its strands. Check for eggs regularly without rough handling. Adults can eat eggs or fry, so a separate, prepared hatching and grow-out setup offers more control when raising young is the goal. Keep eggs submerged during transfer and follow a medaka-specific incubation guide.

Easy to clean and ready to reuse

Before lifting the mop, look carefully for eggs, fry or shrimp among the strands. For routine debris removal, gently swish it in a separate container of removed aquarium water. Never use soap or household detergent. Keep an egg-bearing mop separate from your cleaning routine, inspect the yarn for damage, and use dedicated equipment between tanks. Will a mop work with different medaka colors?

The purpose is the same across ornamental color varieties: an accessible egg-attachment surface. Choose the mop’s color for visibility and the look of your setup, rather than expecting one yarn color to guarantee more eggs.

Choose the look for your aquarium

AquaNest mops come in floating and non-floating styles, with colorways shown in the current shop. Start with the placement your fish need, then choose a color you enjoy. Buying for a fish store or multiple breeding tanks? See our wholesale options.
