Spawning Mops for Mollies & Their Fry

AQUANEST • MOLLIES

Add movable cover to a molly aquarium. AquaNest mops give young fish strands to tuck among, with a choice of colors and an easy-clean design for busy breeding tanks.

Use several mops as removable bottom cover

For mollies, group several non-floating mops into low cover patches along the back or one side of a suitable tank. Keep broad swimming routes for adults and an open feeding area. Fry can retreat among the strands, though cover alone cannot prevent adults from eating them.

Easy cleaning is part of the setup: check for eggs and animals, lift an empty mop by its center tie, swish it in removed aquarium water and siphon the exposed bottom. No soap. See the multiple-mop bottom-cover guide.

A refuge for young fish

Mollies are livebearers. Their fry can use cover among the strands rather than an egg-laying site.

Room to rearrange

Move cover as the tank layout changes, keeping open areas for larger adult fish.

Reusable color

Bring color to the aquarium without waiting for new plant growth. Lift and rinse when needed.

Make space for adults and shelter for fry

Molly aquariums need room for active adults as well as shelter for young fish. A mop can add a compact patch of cover, but it does not replace suitable tank size, filtration or the water conditions your mollies need. Larger types, including sailfin mollies, need a layout that respects their adult size.

Put your mop to work

Place a mop near an existing area of cover and watch how the fish use it. Keep strands away from intakes and maintain open swimming routes. Feed fry appropriately and remove excess food before it fouls the water. Adult mollies and tankmates can still eat fry; use a separate grow-out setup if you want greater control over survival.

Easy to clean and ready to reuse

Before lifting the mop, look carefully for eggs, fry or shrimp among the strands. For routine debris removal, gently swish it in a separate container of removed aquarium water. Never use soap or household detergent. Keep an egg-bearing mop separate from your cleaning routine, inspect the yarn for damage, and use dedicated equipment between tanks. Does yarn replace plants in a molly tank?

It can supplement the cover plants provide and add color where you want it. Yarn does not grow, absorb nutrients like living plants or provide a complete diet. Continue normal feeding, water changes and tank maintenance.

Choose the look for your aquarium

AquaNest mops come in floating and non-floating styles, with colorways shown in the current shop. Start with the placement your fish need, then choose a color you enjoy. Buying for a fish store or multiple breeding tanks? See our wholesale options.
