Why cleaning spawn mops matters
This step-by-step guide explains how to clean your fish mop properly, so your fish spawn mops remain safe and effective for many years.

Tools & materials
- Bucket of tank water or dechlorinated water
- Optional: Hose Sprayer
- Optional: 3% hydrogen peroxide for disinfection
Step-by-step cleaning routine
- Remove the mop: Holding from the center of the mop, Swirl & Lift the fish breeding mop out of the tank carefully checking for fish or fry in the mop. Then move the mop to a clean bucket with aquarium water and lightly swirl again to double check for any fry/shrimp/snails. If any are found, put them back in the aquarium and move to next step.
- Hold from the center and swish well in a bucket of tank or dechlorinated water. Spray with a hose sprayer if needed. Lightly rub together. Holding from center, shake well to release algae and dirt.
- Avoid twisting the mop. Do not hold the mop from the ends of the strings.
- Optional disinfecting: If you’re can’t remove the algae with simple swirling or you suspect pathogens, disinfect with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Mix 1 part peroxide to 3–4 parts water, soak the mop for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
- Final rinse: Rinse the mop again in clean water until the water runs clear.
- Add back to Aquarium or let dry: Gently squeeze the mop underwater to remove air and lightly swirl to bloom your AquaNest . Or air‑dry completely before storing.
Long-term care tips
- Inspect regularly: Check for tangles; replace the mop if tangled.
- Store spares properly: After cleaning and drying, store extra mops in a sealed container to keep them dust‑free.
