How to Clean Fish Spawn Mops

Washable, reusable and easy to maintain. Hold the mop at its center tie and gently swish it in removed aquarium water to lift loose debris. Check for eggs, fry and shrimp first. Keep an egg-bearing mop in its prepared hatching setup; this cleaning routine is for mops free of eggs and animals.

Tools & materials

  • Bucket of tank water or dechlorinated water
  • A spare mop, so you can maintain cover or continue egg collection while another is in use
  • A separate bucket used only for aquarium maintenance; no soap or detergent

Step-by-step cleaning routine

  1. Inspect before lifting: check the strands for eggs, fry, shrimp and snails. If there are eggs you intend to hatch, move the whole mop to the prepared hatching setup instead of cleaning it. Let animals leave the strands before removing an empty mop.
  2. Hold the empty mop from its center tie and gently swish in a bucket of removed aquarium water. Lift out loose debris without pulling or scrubbing the strands.
  3. Hold the mop at its center tie. Avoid twisting it or pulling on the ends of the strands.
  4. Routine cleaning is different from disinfection. If you suspect disease, keep the mop and equipment separate and use a disinfection method appropriate to the pathogen and materials; a quick rinse is not a disease treatment.
  5. Final rinse: Rinse the mop again in a bucket of aquarium water or dechlorinated water.
  6. Return an empty mop to the tank, gently releasing trapped air underwater and spreading the strands. If storing it, let it air-dry completely first.

Long-term care tips

  • Inspect regularly: Check for tangles; replace the mop if tangled.
