Colorful Cover for Goldfish That Eat Plants

Give curious goldfish something new to explore. AquaNest spawning mops bring flowing color and reusable cover to a goldfish tank—even when delicate live plants keep getting nibbled or uprooted.

Build a colorful bottom-cover area

Group several non-floating mops along one side of a suitable bare-bottom tank to create a removable, substrate-like patch. Leave an open area for feeding and swimming, and space the mops so water can circulate.

When it is time to clean, check for eggs and animals, lift each empty mop by its center tie, swish it in removed aquarium water and siphon beneath it. No roots to replant and no soap. Non-floating mops may need several days to wet fully and settle.

Watch our goldfish explore

See our own goldfish swimming around colorful yarn mops. The loose strands move with the water and add structure you can reposition as your tank changes.

A planted look without replanting

Goldfish often nibble leaves and disturb rooted plants. A yarn mop gives you another way to add plant-like texture: no roots to anchor, no leaves to trim and no waiting for growth. Use it alongside hardy live plants or as colorful cover in a simpler setup.

Approximately 200 yarn strands give each AquaNest mop a full appearance. Choose a floating mop for strands suspended near the surface, or a non-floating version for another placement option. Keep open swimming space around the mop so larger fish can move comfortably.

Big fish, colorful habitat

Big fish love mops too…fish like koi and goldfish will often dig up or eat plants, mops are a great alternative if you can’t keep plants in your tank or need extra cover. #koi #goldfish #aquarium #fishkeeping #fishkeeping

Easy to lift out. Easy to clean.

During routine tank maintenance, lift the mop out carefully, swish it in removed aquarium water to release trapped debris, and return it to position. Check for fish, fry or shrimp among the strands first. No roots to replant and no substrate to dig through. See our step-by-step mop cleaning guide for deeper cleaning between uses.

Make it fit your aquarium

Rinse before first use, position away from filter intakes, and watch how your fish interact with it. The yarn is decor, not food: remove a mop if a fish pulls off or swallows fibers, or if it becomes damaged. Continue normal filtration and water changes; yarn does not provide the nutrient uptake of living plants.
