Start Here: Choose Your Spawning Mop

What would you like your mop to do? Start with your aquarium’s needs, then choose the floating option and color that fit your layout.

Killifish

For species that deposit eggs among fine plants, yarn strands offer an accessible spawning surface.

Japanese Ricefish (Medaka)

Female medaka carry a cluster of eggs briefly before attaching them to a suitable surface.

Rainbowfish

Fine yarn strands provide an alternative to fine-leaved spawning plants for suitable species.

Platies & Fry Cover

Add a patch of strands before fry arrive so small fish have somewhere to retreat.

Mollies & Their Fry

Mollies are livebearers. Their fry can use cover among the strands rather than an egg-laying site.

Collect fish eggs: rotate mops

For suitable egg layers, move the whole egg-bearing mop to a prepared hatching/fry tank away from adults, then place a spare mop with the breeders. Match placement and incubation care to your species. Experienced breeders may also pick individual adhesive eggs where appropriate.

Add grazing surfaces for shrimp

A conditioned mop offers many separate strands for biofilm to colonize. Arrange it where shrimp can reach the yarn and you can check for trapped debris.

Help livebearer fry hide: group several mops

Guppies, endlers, platies and mollies give birth to live fry. Arrange multiple mops into dense cover and leave that shelter in the tank, with room for swimming and circulation. This supports colony setups where adults stay in the aquarium, although some fry may still be eaten. Mops also add shelter and structure outside breeding setups.

Choose floating or non-floating

Floating: suspend the strands from the surface. Non-floating: position the mop lower in the aquarium using the included suction cup. New yarn can take time to wet and settle. Leave room around the strands for circulation and keep them away from filter intakes.
